Bipul Chettri needs no introduction who magically blends Nepali folk music with contemporary western elements. His beautiful songs already touched millions of hearts and souls around the world effortlessly. Let’s know more about him
1 Bipul Chettri was born and raised in Kalimpong, Darjeeling in West Bengal India who went to St Augustine’s School before moving to New Delhi.
2 It all started with his first track ‘Wildfire’ which practically brought wildfire (Dadhelo) in his musical career. The experimental song was recorded and uploaded on Sound- Cloud in February 2013. His wife was the first one to hear Wildfire who was immediately impressed with its different genre. The rest is history now.
3 ‘The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek’. Exactly in same way, he put all his financial resources into his first album ‘Sketches of Darjeeling’ which was released in 2014. It would have been entirely different scenario had it not worked well. But it is great that it went far beyond expectations and people loved it.
4 His late father Nirendra Mohan Chettri, a British Gurhka, had been his biggest inspiration. He was a well known musician in Darjeeling area. His fondest memory of his father was when he came to see him performing in school. Sadly, that was the first and last time he saw him on the stage. His father passed away when he was only 9 years old.
5 His debut album ‘Sketches of Darjeeling’ became top selling album on indie online music retail site OKListen.com in 2014-15 in whole India. Then with the release of his second album ‘Maya’ he became top selling artist on same online store.
6 Probably not so good news for ladies fans, he is happily married to Sanjugeeta Moktan 🙂
7 He currently heads ‘Arts Department’ in one of the most prestigious schools in India ‘Vasant Valley School Delhi’ where he also teaches music.
8 During last two years he travelled to USA, UK, Nepal, India, Hong Kong , Australia and Dubai with his band ‘Bipul and The Travelling Band’. His sold out concerts were held in Kathmandu, Pokhara, London, Dubai, Hong Kong, Darjeeling, Gangtok, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Boston, Dallas. Sydney, Melbourne, Pune. And many more scheduled.
9 Do you know why he dedicated one of his much loved tracks ‘Ramsailee’ to his father? Originally it was written by his late father Nirendra Mohan Chettri when he was toddler. He only knew the lyrics of the first half of the song. Since there was no recording of it, he added the second half and rearranged it. This song is an ‘Ode to his beloved father.’ Hope he is listening it there in heaven and probably is very proud of his son.
10 His only 14 songs are released so far. Six from first album and eight from second one.
11 He holds degree in Western Classical Guitar from Trinity College of London; means he is a qualified classical guitar teacher.
12 One musician he would love to associate with is non other than A R Rahman. Hope his dream comes true.
13 ‘Syndicate’ is his most played song on YouTube which has over 3 million view counts.
14 His music is highly inspired by hills and mountains of his hometown Kalimpong/Darjeeling.
‘Timi jane Silaguri ma jane Sikkima tira…’
‘Pani paryo sarara bhijyo Kalimpong sahara….’
‘Darjeeleing ko rail gadi……..’
